Director of Music
MEd (Cantab), PGCE (Cantab)
Cosima completed her Bachelor of Arts at the University of York, studying under accomplished musicians such as Robert Hollingworth, Thomas Simaku and Martin Suckling. From here, she went to the University of Cambridge to study for her PGCE, swiftly followed by completing the Masters in Education; within this, Cosima researched the role that teachers have in enriching their pupils' cultural capital in such a diverse city. Cosima was previously the Music teacher and Head of the House System at the Bishop David Brown School, Woking. Here, Cosima transformed the Music department, setting a strong musical foundation in the school as well as rebranding and relaunching the school House system. Additionally, Cosima is classical singer, pianist, cellist and conductor, who currently holds the position of Vocal Coach at Barnet Parish Church.
The Music Department is at the very heart of The Cedars and plays an important part in the everyday life of the school. During Years 7 and 8 boys have the opportunity to improve their performing, composing and listening skills through the study of a wide variety of musical genres. Music is a popular option at GCSE, and more recently we have introduced Music at A Level.
Outside the classroom, musical opportunities abound with numerous ensembles rehearsing weekly. We have a School Orchestra, Big Band, String Ensemble, Jazz Band, and three choirs (Chapel Choir, Schola Cantorum and Cedars Voices). A large proportion of boys learn an instrument at school, with a dedicated member of our experienced team of visiting music teachers who provide lessons on all instruments.
Opportunities for performance abound for beginners and experts alike, whether as individuals or members of one of the growing number of ensembles and bands that flourish within the school.
