… the disadvantage of men not knowing the past is that they do not know the present. History is a hill or advantage point from which alone men see the town in which they live or the age in which they are living.
G. K. Chesterton
History is one of those key subjects which enables us to go deep into the human condition. History does so by engaging in “inquiry”, the term Herodotus used for his critical investigation of the Persian Wars. At The Cedars, we take this to mean the asking of great questions and the seeking of compelling answers.
Rigour in history matters. Indeed, Ed Smith, the journalist and former England cricketer, said: “Bad history means bad analysis of the past, and bad analysis of the past makes for poor strategy. Poor strategy costs games. History matters.”
History matters. At The Cedars students have three lessons of History a week. Our aim is to equip students with a deep knowledge of British and world history that will give them a strong sense of identity and belonging, an informed perspective on current affairs, and the critical faculties needed for future study and adult life.
History at The Cedars is compulsory up to GCSE. In year 9 students study great modern events in Eudaimonia.
