Our aim is to produce cultivated and literate young men, who can express themselves with accuracy and style.
There are three elements to our pre-GCSE programme: literature, grammar and writing.
Literature: Throughout years 7 to 9, we build a broad appreciation of literature across the genres.
Grammar: Using a traditional programme, we give pupils a thorough understanding of the eight parts of speech.
Writing: Offering a range of imaginative and transactional tasks we aim to develop accurate and stylish writing.
Our approach is to introduce the boys to some of the best examples of literature across the ages. We seek to cultivate a love of English which, we hope, will establish in the boys a life-long passion for reading.
Our focus is on poetry, genre-led short stories, Shakespeare and classic novels. Non-fiction texts do not escape our attention as we recognise the need to develop young men who can read for information and employ the techniques that are necessary for clear, persuasive communication.
Our GCSE programme continues to focus on building writing and analysis skills, as well as cultivating an understanding of great works of literature.
We study Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, Orwell’s Animal Farm, and a selection of post-1789 poetry.
Our GCE English Literature programme focuses on literature that ranges from Shakespeare to contemporary writers. The emphasis is on the growth of independent critical thought coupled with confident expression and a belief that literature is a vital means of understanding culture and the human condition.
