Year 11 Leavers’ Social Evening

Year 11 Leavers’ Social Evening was held on Thursday 21 June 2018 at the Cedars. Mr Teague reminded the boys of two themes from that first assembly which are just as important now as they were then. Firstly,  that he hopes the boys will continue to feel that The Cedars is their school and that their connection with it will endure, even if they are not staying on into the Sixth Form. To this end,  we will soon be launching an association that will enable those who are leaving (and those who left last year) to keep in touch and come back to visit in future.

The other theme from that assembly was the importance of our motto, IN GAUDIO SERVIAMUS –‘let us serve joyfully’. It is such a radical message but familiarity can dull its impact! It communicates one of the deepest truths about our human nature: that it is through service – self-giving love – that we become the people we are meant to be. And that there is no opposition between a spirit of service and joy; on the contrary, they go together.

Back in September 2013, our first pupils heard these words of St Teresa of Calcutta: “At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by ‘I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless, and you took me in.’”

Mother Teresa’s point here is not that qualifications are unimportant but that we should have a clear sense of priorities. For the last few years, study has been a key priority of the boys, as it should have been, and I hope that they will be rewarded with good results in August. I hope also that they will use what they have gained during these years for the good of others.

Year 11 are a fine group of young men – a real credit to their parents. We are proud of them, and those who are leaving in the summer will be greatly missed.
