It was a warm and pleasant summer evening on Wednesday 27th of June. The mood was light and the scene was perfectly set for an exciting programme of music ranging from Baroque to Contemporary.
First up was Jesse Baffour returning to the stage with The Round O
by Edward Huws Jones. Opening a Cedars music concert may have rattled many but not Jesse. The Year 7 violinist breezed on and delivered an excellent opener. Next up was Marcus Velissarides who only recently began learning Sonata in C Major
by Carl Shroeder. However, by the time he launched into his first bar, it was obvious that he had done his homework. Marcus lifted the crowd with a dazzlingly dynamic performance ending with a powerful double stop. When Isaac Brett completed a joyful rendition of Allegro
by C.P.E. Bach, it started to become clear that this was no ordinary Trinity concert. It was perhaps the newcomer Jerzy Todryk who stole the show with Mendelssohn’s Sonata
by Felix Mendelssohn. His timing and accuracy were a joy to see and hear. Upon completion, you could be forgiven for thinking that you were front row at the BBC Proms. Nathan Brown-Bennett confidently finished the set off with a contemporary piece called Mazurka
by Natalie Béra-Tagrine. His mastery of the ‘60s swing number allowed him the licence to add his own signature style finishing off a truly inspirational solo set. Dr Bonnici and the String ensemble completed an exceptional first half of music with Flute Quartet in D Major
by W.A. Mozart.
The second half opened with The Cedars Orchestra performing a fabulous arrangement of the original transcription of Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring. The orchestra then dazzled the crowd with a highly visual performance of Picture Postcards
, an original composition by Dr Bonnici. The Cedars Voices finished off the concert with a beautiful choral piece based on a Cornish folk arrangement titled I Love My Love
by Gustav Holst. The sweet sentiment of the song provided a romantic end to a highly musical year.
